The
SNCR
was founded in 1986 as part of a series of measures by the Swiss government directed against the AIDS epidemic. In addition to testing undertaken as the result of its role as a national reference laboratory for
diagnosis of HIV and other human retroviruses
, the SNCR is also occupied with
diagnostic test development
and is actively engaged in
research related to the field of retroviruses
.
Since September 2008 the SNCR has been integrated as a division within the
Institute of Medical Virology
at the University of Zurich.
